Helena Roerich
1879 - 1955

Globoko medsebojno čutenje in vzvišeni življenjski ideali, so učvrstili njuno dolgotrajno zavezništvo. Skozi življenje sta hodila z roko v roki in duhovno navdihovala drug drugega.

Institucije Master Institute of United Arts, International Art Center Corona Mundi in Roerich Museum so vse nastale ob dejavnem sodelovanju Helene Roerich.

Helena Roerich was born on February 12, 1879 in St. Petersburg in a family of architect Ivan Shaposhnikov. Since the very youth she was seriously interested in literature and philosophy. After graduation she received musical education.

In 1899 Helena met for the first time the young painter Nicholas Roerich, her future husband and close spiritual companion, who would share all her aspirations. A deep mutual feeling and lofty ideals of life made their alliance incredibly lasting. They walked hand in hand all their life, creatively and spiritually fulfilling each other.

Their first son George, who would become a world-famous orientalist, was born in August 1902; the second son, Svetoslav, was born in October 1904, and would follow in his father’s footsteps.

In 1916 the Roerichs moved to Finland. After the Rusian Revolution they went through Stockholm and Copenhagen to London, where Nicholas Roerich was invited to arrange his exhibitions and design sets for some Russian operas.
In the autumn of 1920 the family moved to USA on the invitation of the Chicago Art Institute; besides New-York, the Nicholas’ exhibition traveled to twenty-eight cities across the country. The Master Institute of United Arts, International Art Center Corona Mundi and Roerich Museum were established with the active participation of Helena Roerich.

In 1923 Roerichs arrived to India which had long been attracting them by its rich spiritual and cultural traditions.

From 1925 to 1928 Helena Roerich participated in a unique Central Asian Expedition organized by her husband.

In 1926, while in Ulan-Bator, Mongolia, Helena Roerich’s first book The Foundations of Buddhism was published. Since thеn, Helena almost entirely devoted herself to the main work of her life - the series of books called Living Ethics, the philosophical and ethical Teaching. Living Ethics was created in cooperation and under guidance of the Spiritual Teachers of the East, Mahatmas, named so owing the highest spiritual level of consciousness.

In January, 1948, shortly after the death of her husband, Helena Roerich together with George had left the Kullu Valley, and after a short stay in Delhi and Khandala settled in a small resort town of Kalimpong on the Eastern slopes of Himalayas.

Helena Roerich always strived to return to Russia. But she was not fated to return.

Helena Roerich left this life on October 5, 1955.
