George William Russell se je rodil 10. aprila 1867 v Lurganu, v
okrožju Armagh na Irskem, kot najmlajši od treh sinov za glasbo
navdušenega računovodje. Leta 1878 se je njegova družina preselila
v Dublin, vendar pa je po navadi preživljala počitnice v Armaghu,
kjer je leta 1880 George prvič začutil, da bi poskusil z risanjem
in pisanjem.
Istega leta je začel obiskovati tečaje v Metropolitan
School of Art, od leta 1882 do 1884 pa je bil vpisan na Rathmines
College, kjer je prejel več nagrad iz matematike, klasične književnosti,
jezikov in lepopisja ter se odlikoval po skoraj fotografskem spominu
in doživel svoje prve okultne vizije.
Leta 1884 je George William spoznal W. B. Yeatsa,
ki je leta 1885 ustanovil Dublin Hermetic Society, medtem ko je
bila v Dublinu naslednjega leta ustanovljena tudi loža Teozofskega
Društva. Postal je član obeh organizacij, vendar pa se je leta 1888
oddaljil od Yeatsa. Istega leta je začel uporabljati psevdonim AE,
ko je narisal niz slik pod skupnim naslovom Birt of Aeon.
Leta 1890 je AE začel delati kot računovodja in
se pridružil Ezoterični Sekciji T. D.
V letih 1892-97 je napisal mnoge članke in pesmi
za Irish Theosophist in Irish Homestead te leta 1997 opustil delo
računovodje, da bi se posvetil organiziranju kmetijskih zadrug.
Leta 1898 se je George William poročil z Violet
North, izstopil iz T. D. in obnovil delovanje Hermetic Society.
Štiri leta kasneje se mu je rodil sin Diarmuid.
Od leta 1902 do 1909 je bil AE član literarnega
kroga Georga Moora, sodeloval z Jamesom Joyceom in napisal več pesniških
zbirk, igro Deidre ter bil urednik Irish Homestead
in pesniške zbirke New Songs, številnih irskih pesnikov.
V naslednjih letih je George William Russell nadaljeval
s pisanjem pesmi; od leta 1923 do 1930 pa je bil urednik The
Irish Statesman. Umrl je 17. julija 1935 v Bournemouthu, v Angliji,
pokopali pa so ga v Dublinu.
W. B. Yeats je napisal, da je bil AE "najbolj
duhoven in prefinjen pesnik svoje generacije, vizionar, ki bi ga

George William Russell was born on 10th April 1867 in Lurgan, Armagh
County, Ireland, as the youngest of three sons of musically-inclined
bookkeeper. In 1878 his family moved to Dublin but used to spent
their holidays in Armagh, where in 1880 George felt his first urge
to try drawing and writing.
The same year he started part-time at the Metropolitan
School of Art and from 1882 till 1884 he attended the Rathmines
College, winning prizes in mathematics, classics, languages and
handwriting, and distinguishing himself with almost photographic
memory and experiencing his first occult visions.
In 1884 George William met W. B. Yeats, who, in
1885, founded the Dublin Hermetic Society, while the next year the
Dublin Lodge of the Theosophical Society was founded too. George
William became member of both organizations, but in 1888 he distanced
from Yeats. The same year he adopted the pseudonym AE when painting
series of depicting called the Birth of Aeon.
In 1890 AE begun to work as accountant and joined
the Esoteric Section of the T. S.
During the years 1892-97 he wrote many articles
and poems for the Irish Theosophist and the Irish Homestead
and in 1897 left his job to begun to organize agricultural cooperatives.
In 1898 George William married Violet North, resigned
from the T. S. and revived the work of the Hermetic Society. Four
years later his son Diarmuid was born.
From 1902 till 1909 AE was a member of George Moore’s
Saturday night literary circle, collaborated with James Joyce and
wrote many collections of poems, the play Deidre and edited
the Irish Homestead and collection of poems, the New Songs,
by various Irish poets.
In the following years George William Russell continued
to write poems; from 1923 till 1930 he edited The Irish Statesman.
He died on July 17th 1935 in Bournemouth, England, and was buried
in Dublin.
W. B. Yeats wrote that AE was “the most spiritual
and subtle poet of his generation, and a visionary who may find
some room beside Swedenborg and Blake”.
